Patrizia Novello, a Milanese painter, presents four paintings arranged on three perspective levels, as if to form a scenic backdrop. In these works, Novello reflects and is inspired by the mathematical construction of the Comedy, choosing as leitmotifs the number 3 and the number 11, respectively the number of the canticles and the construction of chained triplets of hendecasyllables. In fact, the three equal sized paintings show the figure of the hendecagon (in full or conceptually evoked by the radii of construction) and the verses taken from the three canticles respectively: the first eleven from Inferno, the central eleven from Purgatorio and the final eleven from Paradiso, as if to create an ideal path encompassing Dante’s entire poem. In the fourth, central canvas, accessible only by approaching and passing beyond the two lateral “backdrops”, we see only three verses, from the parts selected by the artist and painted with differing intensities. These intensities, found in all of Novello’s work, are made of colours inspired by the sky, from the faintest shades of dawn to the darkest ones of the night. The three totems are also created by the artist, each bearing six cards, presenting Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso respectively: the word “lost” engraved by hand on carbon paper; the eleven verses of Purgatorio superimposed on each other until some words are illegible; and finally the freely painted cards of Paradiso.
