DISTORSIONI su PROCESSO DI CADUTA
di Anna Comino

Words like violence | Break the silence | Come crashing in | Into my little world

Voglio dire, siamo nate entrambe negli anni Settanta.

Painful to me | Pierce right through me | Can’t you understand | Oh my little girl

Potrei giurarci. In senso lato, ovviamente. In altri casi, galleristi o studiosi. A volte solo appassionati.

All I ever wanted | All I ever needed | Is here in my arms | Words are very unnecessary | They can only do harm

Forse a tutti. Magari a nessuno.

Vows are spoken | To be broken | Feelings are intense | Words are trivial

Pleasures remain | So does the pain | Words are meaningless | And forgettable

All I ever wanted | All I ever needed | Is here in my arms | Words are very unnecessary | They can only do harm

DISTORTIONS
by Anna Comino

Words like violence | Break the silence | Come crashing in | Into my little world

You and I have never talked about music. To tell the truth, we have never discussed topics that go beyond the specific issues that concern us. I really can't explain why. Yet we belong to the same generation. I mean, we were both born in the 1970s. That must mean something...“Processo di caduta” needs to be watched. Before you can say anything about it, you have to observe it. Preferably for a long time and, for a few moments, with your eyes closed. It may seem contradictory, but it isn't. Seeing with the mind's eye (i.e. exploiting the memory left imprinted on the retina and elaborating from it a new image that has no real points of reference) helps to perceive that space that is there, on display, on the surface layer, but which is difficult to accept. Reading it is challenging, going through it to become fully aware of it is an arduous task. The title chosen by Patrizia Novello, both allusive and ambiguous, brings together numerous pieces that are “cut-outs” from a much larger design. They are the dry synthesis of a portion of a place (not necessarily physical, on the contrary) and a fraction of a moment.

Painful to me | Pierce right through me | Can't you understand | Oh my little girl

I could swear it. We almost certainly opened our eyes to the same fairy tales, watched the same cartoons and went through, or suffered, similar teenage fads. All things that flow by, sometimes smudging the path of growth, only to return to occupy their rightful place: that is, simple elements of formation. Then things change. You decide that art is what really interests you. And so you come into contact with other people like you. In a broad sense, of course. Simply similar, who share with you the need for a certain type of expression. They are artists or critics. In other cases, gallery owners or scholars. Sometimes just enthusiasts. The area where the falling process occurs (which has a lot to do with the procedure) has no coordinates or dimensions. Only in that imaginary space is it possible to create an interruption in the continuous flow of seconds. Once the gap is open, it is easy to slip into the stationary gear, collect that piece of immobilised time, take it out and recompose it into an image. Whether it is single or double, the sheet absorbs the pigment which, almost with a whip, is transferred to it by contact from the sharp movement of the taut thread. The system of lines moves from the base of the support to the established height, neatly framing itself within the side and bottom margins. At the end of the repeated translation, the compact succession of stripes is interrupted, but a murky blackish cloud remains in fade. The rigorous and calibrated balance of the composition leaves the distribution of the intensity of the tones to chance, degrading from extreme saturation to the most faded shadow, due to the progressive exhaustion of the colour's ability to transfer. Just as the voice rises and falls to better accompany the nuances of speech, so the eye acquires the dusty and delicate whispers of the streaks.

All I ever wanted | All I ever needed | Is here in my arms | Words are very unnecessary | They can only do harm

But even when you have found the affinities you were looking for, the question of communicating your insights or discoveries is far from resolved. Gone are the years of programmatic statements, manifestos or even simple stances. Who do you want to know what you think? Perhaps everyone. Perhaps no one. Each element in the sequence appears to differ only in terms of the height of the horizon, but a careful examination of the paper shows that the real variations occur in the graphic texture, where there is a profound pause between each mark, even between the most intense ones. These intervals, in terms of stroke and density, bring movement to the surface, activating unexpected possibilities. The plane expands, suggesting an idea of depth, thanks to the optical system of superimposing several successive images. The swarm of micro-grooves divides, doubles and multiplies the infinitesimal thickness of a sheet of paper, drawing the eye into the dark recesses that are only vaguely intuited. Where another fall begins. Of a purely cerebral nature. Vows are spoken | To be broken | Feelings are intense | Words are trivial You know the story, your own and that of the artistic currents of the twentieth century, and that is precisely where the knot that is so difficult to swallow lies. You know where you come from, but you are also aware that you are different from those who came before you. You are well aware of who and how inspired you the most, but you are out of the game of belonging to this or that movement. For you, it is too late: there is nothing left that truly reflects you. You have to find something else. It is a necessity. A further estrangement is achieved in the cards that feature a small rectangle of dust, resulting from the extension of the operation beyond the baseline, separated and placed at the foot of the sheet as if it were a predella. In the executive dynamic, the two worlds, upper and lower (in the sense of emerged and submerged), are as if they were mirror images of each other. Finding oneself “inside” the work, one is catapulted into a sort of floating island which, despite gravity, presents a foggy thickening at both poles. Looking up or down gives the same sensation. In practice, the scheme is that of a Dante-esque otherworldly realm in which entering the depths of hell or climbing the peaks of purgatory only reverses the sense of progression, since the two hemispheres are a continuation of each other. The fluid passage of crossing boundaries is reconfigured, first by cutting the paper and then by turning it over, offering the observer two views of the black dust, both on the right side.

Pleasures remain | So does the pain | Words are meaningless | And forgettable

You circle around something you sense, but whose whole you still cannot grasp. And you realise, more or less consciously, that others are touching on your same “almost” certainties. But the materials change. For one it is paper, for another iron, for others still ceramics, plastic, resin. And then you begin to wonder: are they really doing what you think they are doing? The path is not vertical. From a preparatory study, then transformed into... Here, the right word is truly missing. It looks like a book, a sort of accordion that unfolds on the wall and traces, with the repetition of the intent, the process of falling (i.e. a diagonal. Saying ascending or descending is not automatic. Since it is a fall, the direction should point downwards, but there is no obligation to read from left to right, or vice versa). What is compact and almost superimposed on a sheet of paper, when expanded occupies numerous pages, marking the line of the trace. Perspective and point of view are the elements that determine understanding. The realisation on tracing paper, in its milky transparency, hides nothing of the execution. The framework (the lines, the folds of the three-dimensional wedge-shaped pages, the intervals) is both meaning and object. A sort of small-format notebook, which reaches environmental dimensions through a deployment that reveals its contents.

All I ever wanted | All I ever needed | Is here in my arms | Words are very unnecessary | They can only do harm

There seems to be a repeated investigation into what the surface is. Above or below its threshold level. An incursion into the third dimension, ideal and real, not without distortions or distortions. Of course, it is not just today that we have been concerned with the surface, but never treating it as a sort of monitor, in which obsessively seeking a combination, almost an interlocking, of parts, shapes, mirrored signs, positive and negative, to which a process is added that allows them to be visualised, sometimes thanks to the active action of the hand or tools or, on the contrary, through passive acceptance by the support or material. Possibly repeating several times. Varying, modifying, developing. Another book, this time in the traditional sense of the term, again resorts to the device of the boundary line between sky and earth, clearly dividing the page into an empty upper margin (treated with tempera, but deliberately flat) and a full lower margin. The small segments that trace a vaguely curved pattern occupy a finite but unstable space. The grey-black lines, obtained by placing carbon paper between the sheet and the instrument, overlap in irregular and narrow contours, gradually losing definition as the copying capacity of the inked sheets progressively diminishes. The incessant and meticulous work leads to feeling the surface, experiencing it as an entity capable of transmitting vibrations. The few words that precede the “illustrations” are defeated on the level of communication and, for once, their role is purely accessory. The fracture of space, of the plane, even of thought, is the point of arrival and also of departure. You look around and you are on the edge of the abyss. The simultaneity of experiences almost assaults you and you know that time, your time, is only the present. It is not easy to talk about it. For you, for anyone. And so closing yourself off, being solitary seems the only possible answer. But it is too noisy a solitude, which soon transforms, and you realise that you belong to a single multitude. Now that I think about it, we never talked about literature either.
